Climate change could spark ocean ‘disaster,’ UCI scientists say

Warmer seawater is causing a slowdown of deep circulation patterns in the Atlantic and southern oceans, according to Earth system scientists, and if the process continues, the ocean’s ability to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere will be severely limited, further exacerbating global warming.

Last call: Museum salutes pioneering alumna artist Alexis Smith

In its wild and sometimes wacky first decade, UCI’s art department played a pivotal role in California’s modern art movement. One of the stars was Alexis Smith, a 1970 graduate who became known for collages that combine offbeat elements—including steering wheels, bowling balls, movie stills and advertising art—into witty, often sardonic statements. A 50-piece exhibition of her work, the first retrospective in 30 years, is in its final weeks at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla. The show closes Jan. 29.
