UCI welcomes back Orange County Regional Science Olympiad

For the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, UCI once again hosted the Orange County Regional Science Olympiad on Feb. 25. More than 1,000 students from middle and high schools throughout the county arrived on campus to undergo written exams and engage in partnered science projects and experiments. UCI’s Kimberly Edwards, a professor of teaching in the Department of Chemistry, has led the university’s involvement in the Science Olympiad, which began in 1984, since it moved to the Irvine campus in 2015.

Medical students eagerly await Friday’s residency program Match Day 

This Friday, thousands of medical students across the U.S. – including 98 from UCI – will learn where they’ll spend the next three to seven years in residency programs they’ve been “matched” with after earning their M.D. degrees this spring. All pandemic restrictions for in-person attendance have been eliminated for this year’s event at UCI, allowing the class of 2023 to invite friends and family to share the Match Day experience. Pat Harriman recently spoke to three of these students about their stories and hopes for the future.

3-year anniversary of COVID-19 pandemic raises questions

On the third anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic, the virus still spreads and the death toll nears 7 million worldwide, reports the Associated Press. While most people have resumed normal lives, experts warn that the virus appears here to stay, along with the threat of a more dangerous version sweeping the planet.

Yet another atmospheric river to hit rain-soaked California

Another warm-air atmospheric river storm will drop more rain and snow on California this week, raising concerns about additional flooding and snowmelt in the already soaked state, according to the Los Angeles Times. The storm, which originated near Hawaii, is expected to intensify Monday into Wednesday. The National Weather Service warns that it will create “considerable flooding impacts below 5,000 feet elevation across much of the California Coast and Central Valley and over the southern Sierra Nevada foothills.” Between 1 and 2 inches of rain is expected in Southern California foothills and coastal areas.

By coming to campus each day, students and employees are attesting they are free of COVID-19 symptoms and are not COVID-19 positive. If you currently have symptoms of COVID-19 or recently tested positive, do not come to campus, or if you currently live on campus stay in your residence, and follow instructions for reporting your case or assessing symptoms on the UCI Forward page. Close contacts to a COVID-19 case are not required to stay home or quarantine, but should follow guidance for close contact instructions for masking and testing on the UCI Forward page.

UCI provides this notification of a potential workplace COVID-19 exposure. Employees and subcontractors who were in these locations on the dates listed may have been exposed to the coronavirus.
