How acupuncture really works

More than one third of Americans use alternative and integrative medicine, including homeopathy, acupuncture and herbalism. Richard Harris, a professor of anesthesiology and perioperative care, has a keen interest in Eastern medicine, specifically acupuncture, and recently shared his perspective on how acupuncture works based on his years of research and brain-imaging studies. His take: Inserting acupuncture needles activates nerve cells, which fights inflammation while sending signals into the spinal cord and the brain, thus rewiring certain brain-body circuitry.

UCI Health doctors make patient’s wish come true

Jason Fox (center) pictured with family

Jason Fox, 24 (above, center), who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, has been a lifelong fan of the Anaheim Ducks, but he’d never attended a game. So, his doctors, UCI Health internist Erin Newman and hospitalist Lucas Puttock, teamed with UCI Health social workers and others to make that happen. On Jan. 31, Fox, along with his family, got to watch the Ducks defeat the San Jose Sharks from a private suite at the Honda Center. He was also joined by his doctors.
