Fall 2016: “Reaching for the Sky”

I was an undergrad at UCI in the ’90s. Said Shokair was a mentor to a lot of students, and I happen to be one of them. As an alumnus, I get (and love) UCI Magazine, and much to my surprise, there was an article about him [“Outside the Box,” page 19]. Glad to see it looks like he’s still doing great things at UCI.

I am writing to express my gratitude for showcasing the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program’s support of faculty-student collaborations in UCI Magazine [“Research A to Z,” page 14]. We will continue to make you proud; you have further energized me to do more.

Thank you for the field study story in UCI Magazine [“Experience Required,” page 34]. Rosemary McClure did an excellent job of highlighting our programs.

Spring 2016: “The Brain”

Having just completed reading the spring issue, I would like to commend you on the coverage.

There is one disease missing: Huntington’s disease. Neal Hermanowicz, M.D., has been instrumental in getting UCI’s Huntington’s Disease Clinic started, and Leslie Thompson, Ph.D., has been researching this disease for over 20 years.

There is no treatment for this progressively degenerative, fatal brain disease, nor is there a cure, and although it seems to be an easy solution with only one affected gene, it’s not going to be a slam-dunk. We need all the publicity we can get to educate the masses on the need for research funding.
