UCI scientists unveil infrared visualization technology

UCI scientists have developed a new visualization technology that captures spectral images of materials in the mid-infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The discovery, which was recently featured on the cover of the journal Science Advances, promises to help researchers and industries across many fields, including medical and tech, quickly visualize the chemical composition of various materials or tissues. In the medical field, the most likely applications will be in analyzing tissues afflicted by disease, dramatically speeding up and improving tests. The technology can also detect changes in chemical composition over time – which would be helpful when tracking chemical reactions and processes.

UCI English professor wins career recognition for teaching

Jonathan Alexander, Chancellor’s Professor of English and informatics, has received the 2023 Exemplar Award from the Conference on College Composition and Communication, a constituent organization within the National Council of Teachers of English. He shares the 2023 honor with Jacqueline Rhodes, professor of rhetoric and composition at the University of Texas at Austin. The CCCC executive committee presents the Exemplar Award to persons who represent the highest ideals of scholarship, teaching and service to the entire profession. Exemplar Awards recognize individuals whose work is national and international in scope and who set the best examples for CCCC membership.

Close contacts to a COVID-19 case are not required to stay home or quarantine, but should follow guidance for close contact instructions for masking and testing on the UCI Forward page.
