UN report marking progress in ozone layer depletion first exposed by UCI scientists
On Jan. 9, a United Nations-backed panel of experts announced that Earth’s protective ozone layer is on track to recover within four decades, closing an ozone hole over the Antarctic that was first noticed in the 1980s. The report marks major progress on a crisis first exposed via UCI research in the 1970s by chemistry professor F. Sherwood “Sherry” Rowland and postdoctoral student Mario Molina. The pair discovered that a single chlorine atom byproduct from aerosol hairsprays, deodorants and other popular consumer products could chew up 100,000 ozone atoms in the stratosphere. UCI launches new diversity-oriented public health training program
Thanks to a $7 million grant from the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, UCI is introducing two new public health programs this year. In partnership with the Orange County Health Care Agency and OCHIN Inc., the new informatics and technology training programs will add to UCI’s existing summer internship program and a minor degree program and is aimed at advancing diversity in the public health field.
UCI’s Office of Inclusive Excellence issues student awards
As part of a recent call for proposals for Confronting Extremism through Community, Thriving and Wellness, 10 projects have been funded to pilot or build synergy using evidence-based strategies that rebuild, reframe, and transform our community members and institutions for inclusive excellence. The Office of Inclusive Excellence funded nearly $250,000 to support the selected projects, which represent eight units across UCI.
Awardees are: Laura Enriquez, School of Social Sciences, Department of Chicano/Latino Studies; Brandon Golob, School of Social Ecology, Department of Criminology, Law and Society; Sora Han, School of Humanities, Department of African American Studies; Cynthia Haq, School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine; Alana LeBrón, Program in Public Health and School of Social Sciences, Department of Chicano/Latino Studies; Keramet Reiter, School of Social Ecology, Department of Criminology, Law and Society; Rossella Santagata, School of Education; Sora Park Tanjasiri, Program in Public Health; Sydney Torres, Division of Student Affairs, Womxn’s Center for Success; and David Trend, Claire Trevor School of the Arts, Department of Studio Art.

UC President Drake responds to Governor Newsom’s proposed budget
On Tuesday, UC President Michael V. Drake issued a statement on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed 2023-24 budget. “Governor Newsom has put forward a budget proposal that maintains his strong commitment to the University of California and allows us to continue our important work supporting all Californians,” Drake said. “At this time of declining State revenues, his support for the University and our students is truly extraordinary. We are grateful for his continued support of the University.”
Upcoming UC Town Hall seeks questions from staffers
UC President Michael V. Drake will hold a systemwide UC Town Hall on Feb. 24, 2023, from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. He will share opening remarks, then engage in conversation with Priya Lakireddy and Jo Mackness, staff advisor and staff advisor-designate to the UC Regents. All UC staff are invited to submit questions in advance of the event.

UCI provides this notification of a potential workplace COVID-19 exposure. Employees and subcontractors who were in these locations on the dates listed may have been exposed to the coronavirus.
