UCI scientists make advancement in nickel-based battery research

A team of researchers led by UCI and Brookhaven National Laboratory scientists has conducted a detailed examination of high-nickel-content layered cathodes, key components of next-generation batteries. The research, recently published in Nature Materials, shows promise for a transition away from lithium-ion batteries, which often rely on controversial cobalt mining operations in wartorn countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo.

UC Board of Regents is searching for a student regent

As a full voting member of the UC board, the 2024-25 student regent will represent students across the university’s 10-campus system. This impactful role brings the voice of the student to every issue and decision before the board. All UC students are eligible for this opportunity, which comes with a stipend and a waiver for all systemwide tuition and fees during the two-year term of service. The deadline to apply is March 12.
