UCI Minute: What is RSV, and what’s behind the surge in cases?
In this edition of the UCI Minute, Dr. Coleen Cunningham, senior vice president and pediatrician-in-chief at Children’s Hospital of Orange County and chair of the UCI Department of Pediatrics, addresses the recent surge of RSV cases and answers questions about the virus, including how to protect children from the disease.

UCI scientists chart future of sustainable air travel
In a paper published in Nature Sustainability, UCI Earth systems scientists outline ways for the airline industry to significantly reduce its high-carbon footprint, a necessary task to help make possible the goal set by many countries of stabilizing global mean temperature by 2050. Assuming moderate growth in demand for flights over the next few decades, steps to curtail aviation emissions include business practice and infrastructure enhancements, more efficient propulsion systems and greatly expanded use of sustainable aircraft fuels, the paper’s authors note.

Irvine Chamber of Commerce honors UCI Health
During its Jan. 26 black-tie Excellence in Healthcare Gala, the Greater Irvine Chamber recognized outstanding healthcare organizations and innovative industry leaders who continue to make advances in the region’s formidable healthcare sector. Among the honorees was the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, which won the Wellness Program of the Year prize.

ICS creates Periodic Table of Black History
To celebrate Black History Month in 2021, a Florida elementary school student named Dana Boone put up a periodic table of the elements honoring African American pioneers in science and technology. Boone got the idea from staff members at nearby Lakeland Public Library. Now, following their lead, UCI’s School of Information and Computer Sciences has created its own ICS Periodic Table of Black History.

California drops COVID-19 vaccine mandate for schoolchildren
A California policy requiring all schoolchildren in the state to receive COVID-19 vaccines, which was enacted in October 2021 but has been on hold since April 2022, has now been lifted. The move, which affects 6.7 million children in California, comes as health officials plan to end the state’s official COVID-19 emergency status on Feb. 28.

Daily COVID-19 Symptom check
By coming to campus each day, students and employees are attesting they are free of COVID-19 symptoms and are not COVID-19 positive. If you currently have symptoms of COVID-19 or recently tested positive, do not come to campus, or if you currently live on campus stay in your residence, and follow instructions for reporting your case or assessing symptoms on the UCI Forward page. Close contacts to a COVID-19 case are not required to stay home or quarantine, but should follow guidance for close contact instructions for masking and testing on the UCI Forward page.
Potential workplace exposure
UCI provides this notification of a potential workplace COVID-19 exposure. Employees and subcontractors who were in these locations on the dates listed may have been exposed to the coronavirus. You may be entitled to various benefits under applicable federal and state laws and University-specific policies and agreements. The full notification is available on the UCI Forward site. If you have been identified as a close contact to a COVID-19 case, the UCI Contact Tracing Program will contact you and provide additional direction.
