UCI’s Transfer Student Center helps guarantee a smooth transition for new students

For the thousands of new undergraduate transfer students who enroll at UCI each fall, adjusting to the university’s academic environment– or even learning their way around campus–can be challenging. To help them along, the Division of Undergraduate Education has created the Transfer Student Center to provide support and guidance. A full one-third of each new undergraduate class at UCI are transfer students, most of them from California’s community colleges. As TSC’s director, Joanna Hernandez, a first-generation Latina and former foster youth student, is dedicated to advocating for first-gen and low-income students’ needs.

The thrice-annual event has been held the past seven years thanks to the Office of Inclusive Excellence and alumni Ilona Yim, professor and interim chair of psychological science, and Elizabeth van Es, professor of education. It’s open to all UCI junior faculty who are interested in writing in a collaborative and supportive environment.
