Chancellor joins Hispanic colleges roundtable

Chancellor Howard Gillman was among more than a dozen university chancellors and presidents who spoke Thursday at a Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities roundtable in Washington, D.C. The roundtable brought together higher education leaders and officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to discuss a broad range of issues about how DHS could better advance Hispanics in higher education and how Hispanic-serving institutions could help the department advance its mission. Gillman spoke on cybersecurity and, in particular, how the department could help HACU institutions build a more diverse pathway for students interested in cybersecurity, starting with supporting existing outreach efforts to regional school districts and continuing through to programs that would get more Hispanic undergraduates into graduate programs. He also discussed how support for cutting-edge research would help ensure a more diverse group of experts in the field.

Early-life stress linked to brain reward disorders

A new brain connection discovered by UCI researchers can explain how early-life stress and adversity trigger disrupted operation of the brain’s reward circuit, offering a new therapeutic target for treating mental illness. Impaired function of this circuit is thought to underlie several major disorders, such as depression, substance abuse and excessive risk-taking. In a study published online in Nature Communications, Dr. Tallie Z. Baram, senior author and Donald Bren Professor and Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Anatomy & Neurobiology, Pediatrics, Neurology and Physiology & Biophysics, and Matt Birnie, lead author and a postdoctoral researcher, describe the cellular changes in the brain’s circuitry caused by exposure to adversity during childhood.

New interdisciplinary program focuses on science of climate change

The School of Social Ecology, School of Physical Sciences and Henry Samueli School of Engineering have launched a certificate program for students interested in becoming “environmental changemakers.” The Environmental Changemakers Certificate, now available to all UCI undergraduates, requires one course from each of the three schools. The goal is to provide instruction in the science of climate change, the technological responses and the After successfully completing the courses, students can apply for the certificate by reporting on their coursework, what they learned and their future goals. After review, students can receive a digital certificate. The certificate will not appear on transcripts, but students can display it online and list it on their resumes.
