Hunting for cures to hair loss

In their quest to reverse baldness, UCI biologist Maksim Plikus and dermatologist Dr. Natasha Mesinkovska have pondered hair mysteries (such as what makes locks curly versus straight?), grappled with research obstacles and encountered various dubious remedies. Their promising research has garnered national attention.

Talk about a disparate double major. Emily Truong is studying both dance and data science at UCI, hoping for a career in healthcare (she recently finished a data analytics internship with Kaiser Permanente). “It’s kind of hard to dance at a data science job,” Truong concedes, so she intends to pursue that passion during off-hours after graduation.

Charts show UC admission rates for every California high school

About a quarter of public school seniors applied to the UC system last year, according to an analysis by the San Francisco Chronicle. Of those, about two-thirds were admitted (66%), and slightly less than half of that group (48%) enrolled. Private school seniors were much more likely to apply (52%), but their admission and enrollment rates (60% and 36%, respectively) were lower. At the other end of the equation, UCI is now the third most selective UC, having admitted just 18% of in-state freshman applicants in 2022, the paper reports.
