Esports student success

Esports student success
UCI Esports is now in its seventh year. During this time, 82 athletes have earned a spot on one of the team rosters. Historical student data reveals how esports athletes compare with the general UCI student body, including a 94% five-year graduation rate.

Colorectal cancer rising in younger adults

Colorectal cancer, which is on the rise in younger adults, is projected to become the leading cause of U.S. cancer-related deaths by 2040 among people ages 20 to 49, according to a recent study. A parallel spike in childhood obesity may be linked, said Dr. William E. Karnes, a gastroenterologist and director of high-risk colorectal cancer services at the UCI Health Digestive Health Institute.

Bringing care to underserved communities

As the most populous and culturally diverse U.S. state, California has large regions that are known as medically underserved areas. The medical schools of University of California Health began introducing an innovative training curriculum called Programs in Medical Education or UC PRIME. Medical students who enter UC PRIME programs receive specialized coursework so they are better able to meet the health needs of underserved populations. The first PRIME program began in the UCI School of Medicine in 2006 – the Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community.

An alumna of the School of Education, Vicki Vasques ’81 shares why she gives to her alma mater. During Vasques’ illustrious career in education, first as a teacher and later in the U.S. Department of Education, she implemented and supported policies for American Indian education. She credits a large part of her success to her time at UCI and her mentor Mary Roosevelt.

If you currently have symptoms of COVID-19 or recently tested positive, do not come to campus, or if you currently live on campus stay in your residence, and follow instructions for reporting your case or assessing symptoms on the UCI Forward page. Close contacts to a COVID-19 case are not required to stay home or quarantine, but should follow guidance for close contact instructions for masking and testing on the UCI Forward page.

UCI provides this notification of a potential workplace COVID-19 exposure. Employees and subcontractors who were in these locations on the dates listed may have been exposed to the coronavirus. You may be entitled to various benefits under applicable federal and state laws and University-specific policies and agreements. The full notification is available on the UCI Forward site. If you have been identified as a close contact to a COVID-19 case, the UCI Contact Tracing Program will contact you and provide additional direction.
