How to study abroad without leaving campus

How to study abroad without leaving campus
Starting this spring, UCI language students will be able to wander the streets of Vietnam, practice Tagalog in the Philippines, explore the Arabic-speaking world and more—all from the comfort of a small, unassuming classroom in the Humanities Instructional Building. Using a new virtual reality program, students can don headsets to “travel” anywhere in the world, converse with native speakers and experience linguistic and cultural immersion without the costs of studying abroad.

What would happen if cash became obsolete?

If all purchases had to be digital, the side effects “would be terrible,” says Social Sciences Dean Bill Maurer. For starters, non-cash payments require a person to have a bank account. If paper money goes away, the mostly poor people who don’t use banks “are stuck with no way to pay,” he explains. Privacy and security are also at risk, he notes: “When I hand you a $20 bill, there is no data captured by anybody from that transaction.” But with electronic purchases, governments could use digital trails to surveil a population and even prevent people from making transactions that aren’t government-approved, Maurer says.

Author Judy Blume (second from left) has largely resisted requests to turn her books into films. But she made an exception after receiving a letter from UCI alumna Kelly Fremon Craig (center), a screenwriter who previously directed and wrote “The Edge of Seventeen.” In a Q&A with The Orange County Register, Craig talks about the letter and her new film, “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” which stars Kathy Bates (far left), Abby Ryder Fortson (second from right) and Rachel McAdams (right).
