Biologists make butterfly vision discovery

Biologists make butterfly vision discovery
As butterflies flit among flowers, they don’t see blossoms the same way. In a phenomenon called sexually dimorphic vision, females of some species perceive ultraviolet color while the males see light and dark. Now, UCI biologists have discovered that in at least one species, the variation results from a vision gene’s jump onto a sex chromosome. It’s the first known finding that this kind of genetic change causes sexually dimorphic vision.

If Barbie were chancellor…

Anteater Learning Pavilion is depicted in mid-Barbie makeover
What would happen if Mattel’s iconic doll were in charge of UCI? Perhaps Skipper would be named provost, Ken would play Hamlet at the New Swan Theater and Gumby would direct diversity efforts. Also, the campus itself would be bathed in pink, as seen in a recent UCI Instagram post conceived by social media maven Laura Rico and carried out by senior graphic designer Rene Gauthier-Butterfield. Above, the Anteater Learning Pavilion is depicted in mid-Barbie makeover. Below, the Science Library gets Barbie-fied as a passing tour group morphs into dolls.

Correction: An item in Tuesday’s UCI Digest referred to a UCI medical school diversity program as LEAD-ABC. The program is now called PRIME LEAD-ABC, short for Programs in Medical Education Leadership Education to Advance Diversity – African, Black and Caribbean.
