Welcome to Year of Free Speech at UCI

Chancellor Howard Gillman and Michelle Deutchman in a discussion

To kick things off for the Year of Free Speech and Academic Freedom at UCI, Chancellor Howard Gillman and Michelle Deutchman, executive director of the UC National Center on Free Speech and Civic Engagement, are teaching a one-unit, pass/no pass, online course on the topic. A short video provides more information on the course. 

Introducing UCI’s Engineering-Law Scholarship Program 

UCI Law and The Henry Samueli School of Engineering have established the Engineering-Law Scholarship Program, a collaboration to offer engineering graduates scholarships to study intellectual property law and related topics. The program — which includes a $30,000 tuition scholarship per year, available for both residents and nonresidents — is designed to prepare engineers for legal careers.

UC campuses top Forbes, Washington Monthly rankings

UC campuses earned marks as some of the best colleges in the country, according to Forbes and Washington Monthly in recently released rankings. Forbes’ 2023 America’s Top Colleges list, which showcases 500 of the finest U.S. colleges, ranked eight UC campuses among its top 100 public and private colleges in the country, including UCI, which ranked 23rd among public schools and 61st among all universities. Washington Monthly ranked 1,487 schools and placed UCI at No. 34 among public universities and 63rd overall.

The California Arts Council has awarded $840,000 in Individual Artist Fellowships to 58 artists in Southern California. Among the recipients are (from left, above) Department of Drama alumna Chantrell Lewis, Claire Trevor School of the Arts professor of dance S. Ama Wray, and Joseph S. Lewis III, professor of art. The fellowship grants support individual artistic practices and foster creativity across a broad spectrum of disciplines.
