The Hub opens at ANTrepreneur Center

A new space opens Oct. 16 at the ANTrepreneur Center called The Hub. Launched by the Office of Data and Information Technology and in partnership with the ANTrepreneur Center, the Hub curates resources from participating corporate technology partners, and others, providing tools, sandboxes and training environments for the UCI community at no cost. Join the soft opening at 4 p.m. and come see what it’s all about.

UCI astronomers offer tips for safe observation of Saturday’s eclipse

On Saturday, a partial solar eclipse will be viewable across the continental U.S. Viewers in Southern California will see a partial eclipse in which the moon will cover up to 70 percent of the sun at its peak. In Irvine, the partial eclipse will begin at 8:08 a.m., reach maximum at 9:25 a.m. and end at 10:51 a.m. Aaron Barth, a professor in physics and astronomy, stressed the importance of eye safety during the eclipse. The Department of Physics and Astronomy has a site with information about the eclipse, safe viewing practices and links to other resources.

University of California recognizes signing of unique transfer student pilot program collaboration with state leaders

With Gov. Newsom’s signing of AB 1291, the University of California will establish a new Associate Degree for Transfer pilot program at UCLA. The initial launch will include at least eight majors by the 2026-27 academic year and includes collaborations with select California community colleges chosen by the campus. This bill also provides for an admissions guarantee to the UC system for transfer students who meet the necessary admissions requirements and are not offered a space at a campus of their choice, rerouting those students to at least one other campus in the University of California system. By 2028-29, UC will expand the pilot to at least four additional campuses.

‘05 social ecology alum to appear on Shark Tank on Oct. 13

Tustin resident Jon Batarse ‘05 is scheduled to appear alongside 8-year-old son Gavin and daughter Morgan, 11, in front of a panel of potential investors — aka “sharks” — to sell them on “Glove Wrap,” a device designed to break in and shape the gloves of baseball/softball players and hockey goalies. Watch them on TV show “Shark Tank” airing Oct. 13, at 8 p.m. on broadcast channel ABC.
