When news of a mysterious virus later named COVID-19 began to circulate in early 2020, the UCI Medical Center’s Thien (Tim) Do, an emergency department nurse, began to educate himself about the illness and prepare as best he could. Then in late April 2020, he fell gravely ill with the virus. Do survived but today he worries that society is taking the disease and its lessons too lightly. UCI alum and artist turns life into art
|
|
When Barbara T. Smith enrolled in a new M.F.A. program at UCI in 1969, she began creating ritualistic performances that explored her limits psychologically. Now, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, is featuring her largest exhibition yet, “Barbara T. Smith: Proof” through Jan. 14. It ranges from her photocopies and paintings of the 1960s to her body-based and soul-searching performances and installations from the ’70s, ’80s and beyond, with many works touching on emotional vulnerability, sexual and spiritual growth, and the nurturing power of community.
