UCI researchers explore the benefits of producing farm-free food
In a new study published in Nature Sustainability, a UCI-led team of scientists led by Stephen Davis (above), a professor of Earth system science, have assessed the potential for wide-scale synthetic production of dietary fats through chemical and biological processes, including synthetic butter. The raw materials for this method are the same as those used by plants: hydrogen in water and carbon dioxide in the air. The study highlights the environmental and societal benefits of farm-free food, including a reduction in water use and watershed pollution, local control over food production, diminished risk of weather-related food shortages, and less need for low-paying and physically demanding agricultural labor.

UCI hosts ‘Cabaret’ as part of Year of Free Speech lineup
On Nov. 11, UCI will host a one-week run of “Cabaret,” a carnivalesque musical adapted from a 1951 play based on a 1939 book and better known as a 1972 Academy Award-winning film. Set in 1929 at the dawn of the Nazi era in Germany, “Cabaret” is billed as part of the university’s ongoing Year of Free Speech event lineup for its exploration of how artistic expression can be gradually stifled and silenced as oppressive forces tighten their grip on society.

More than half of UC transfer students pay no tuition
Nearly a third of UC undergraduate students start at a California community college. But once students do make the jump, they’re often surprised at how much financial help UC provides to offset college costs. In fact, UC has one of the best financial aid programs in the country, with 74% of California transfer students receiving financial aid and 62% of community college students paying no tuition.
