Law project aligns land use with climate goals

In collaboration with the state of California, the UCI School of Law has unveiled an initiative called Integrated and Equitable Climate Action. The brainchild of Gregg Macey (above left), director of the Center for Land, Environment and Natural Resources, and Alejandro Camacho (right), a Chancellor’s Professor of law, the project aims to use a $1.2 million state climate grant to align local land-use plans with climate objectives and mandates while promoting equitable adaptation planning.

Shawn Khalifa is one of 44 participants in UCI’s Underground Scholars Program for people who are or were in prison. After serving time for first-degree murder at age 15, Khalifa left prison 16 years later and is now on track to graduate in June with a degree in sociology. His journey highlights the transformative power of education and support to change lives and trajectories. In this UCI Podcast, Khalifa opens up about his personal history and reveals how his experiences are shaping his career goal to develop education policies.

Having trouble focusing on your New Year’s resolutions? You’re not alone. According to Gloria Mark, a UCI professor emerita of psychology, people are more distracted than ever. Mark began studying attention patterns more than 20 years ago. In an interview with UC News, she talks about how attention spans are shrinking, but says it’s possible to escape the trend and reclaim your ability to focus.

Fulbright scholars make a global difference

More than 200 Anteaters – 78 undergraduates and 129 graduate students – have participated in the Fulbright Program since 1992. Among them are Elizabeth Hafen ’22, who is in Madrid, researching Spain’s immigration policies. The international academic exchange offers students the chance to study, conduct research or teach in over 160 countries; about 8,000 grants are awarded each year. In 2023, UCI was designated as a Fulbright Hispanic-Serving Institution Leader for the third year in a row.
