Public Health mentors youths in community service
UCI’s Program in Public Health welcomes a nonprofit to its roster of practicum partners. In January, Team Kids began hosting fourth-year undergraduate interns. No stranger to the campus, Team Kids has been partnering with UCI for more than 23 years. Through the new program, UCI interns will mentor local youths in community service activities and fundraisers for issues such as homelessness, hunger and mental health awareness.
Surgical first removes tumor without affecting fertility
After being diagnosed with a rare tumor in which radiation treatment typically causes loss of fertility, an 18-year-old woman turned to UCI Health’s gynecologic oncology team. In a first-of-its-kind reconstructive surgery, the team was able to remove the cancer while retaining the woman's ability to have children. The complex procedure was reported in a medical journal last summer.
