​​Team uncovers role of enzymes in cancer mutations

A UCI-led research team uncovered the roles that two enzymes play in causing cancer mutations by modifying the DNA in tumor genomes. The finding offers potential new avenues for treating the illness. The study’s corresponding author was Rémi Buisson (center), an assistant professor of biological chemistry, who was joined by postdoctoral fellow Pedro Ortega (left) and graduate student Ambrocio Sanchez from Buisson’s laboratory in the School of Medicine.

Leadership program trains staff in digital technology
The Paul Merage School of Business collaborated with UCI’s Office of Data and Information Technology to create an IT Leadership Academy that aims to ensure the university stays at the forefront of the evolving digital landscape. During the most recent event, which was held last month, more than 70 campus and UCI Health staff members learned about digital transformation, strategizing around artificial intelligence, creative problem solving, conflict management, and collaboration.

As part of UCI’s Year of Free Speech and Academic Freedom, Chancellor Howard Gillman and Michelle Deutchman, executive director of the UC National Center on Free Speech and Civic Engagement, are again teaching a one-unit, pass/no pass, online course on the topic during the spring quarter. A short video provides more information on the course. The course is open to students, staff and faculty.

Nominations are open for the inaugural Student Sustainability Awards, which recognize important student contributions to UCI and Orange County for sustainable progress, advocacy and research. Undergrad and graduate students are eligible for the awards. Winners will be announced April 25 at the Beyond Earth Week Banquet.

New vice provost announced

Stephanie Reyes-Tuccio, vice provost for educational and community partnerships

Stephanie Reyes-Tuccio has been appointed as vice provost for educational and community partnerships. Reyes-Tuccio has led the Center for Educational Partnerships since 2007 and currently serves as assistant vice chancellor for educational partnerships in the School of Education. In her new role, she will build on the success of CFEP while developing strategic community engagement initiatives designed to build a pipeline for academic programs across the university. Reyes-Tuccio joined UCI in 2000 as director of the UCI History Project after completing her Ph.D. in history here
