Vanessa Le, a medical student at UC Irvine, just published the first novel in her young adult fantasy duology. In The Last Bloodcarver, 18-year-old protagonist Nhika peddles homeopathic remedies to upper-class clients. After a home visit goes awry, she is outed as a bloodcarver, someone with the feared ability to manipulate biological processes with a single touch. In an interview with Publisher’s Weekly, Le spoke about how her book fits into the ‘silkpunk’ subgenre of science fiction, in which human technology mimics animal or natural biology.
