UCI Health unveils utilities plant at Irvine campus
The completion of the central utilities plant on the UCI Health – Irvine medical campus marks a major milestone for the organization’s sustainability goals. The plant will deliver clean energy to the entire site, setting a precedent in an industry known for massive power demands and large carbon dioxide emissions. The plant avoids carbon combustion and natural gas as power sources. However, in case of emergencies or blackouts, UCI Health maintains backup diesel generators, complying with federal and state requirements.

Researching clean energy for ‘everyone and everything’
UC Irvine’s Clean Energy Institute was founded in 2022 as an umbrella organization to help coordinate and administer sustainability research for several campus interdisciplinary centers. Its first director, Jack Brouwer, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, discusses clean energy research at UC Irvine and how that will benefit California, the U.S. and the world. Brouwer advocates for the U.S. to completely decarbonize by 2050. “Even if we only get halfway there by 2050, it’s a good thing,” he says. “We have insufficient policies and investment so far; we should be doing more. I want to do more of that at the Clean Energy Institute....We’ve got to move at a faster pace.”
