Helping Pacific Islanders feel more at home

Leighani Sablan
Pacific Islanders account for just one-tenth of a percent of UC Irvine students, a number that can make life on a mainland campus feel isolating. To counter that, a faculty-staff work group applied for a grant to build a resource center. “When we have students who are struggling and don’t have a sense of belonging, we try to create spaces for them that are familiar,” says Sherwynn Umali of Student Affairs. But the grant application failed, so senior Leighani Sablan (above) and several classmates helped launch the Pacific Islander Student Association last fall as a way to build fellowship among Native Hawaiian, Tongan, Samoan and Chamorro Anteaters.

Hormone spike tied to postpartum depression

A research team led by UC Irvine found evidence that a placental hormone spike late in pregnancy is linked with postpartum depression symptoms. The discovery could enable earlier detection of at-risk mothers. “Symptoms of depression following the birth of a child can have adverse effects for mothers, children and families, so it’s vitally important that we work to understand the causes,” said lead author Isabel F. Almeida, UC Irvine assistant professor of Chicano/Latino studies and director of the Latina Perinatal Health Lab.

Typeface change sparks ‘fontroversy’

Keith Murphy
Microsoft’s recent rollout of a new default font called Aptos to replace Calibri has spurred some debate (or “fontroversy”) among MS Office users. Anthropology professor and design expert Keith Murphy explains why the change was made and analyzes how the public reacts to new typefaces and logos, including “the notorious University of California rebranding fiasco of 2012.”

Encampment update

Discussions were expected to continue today to end the protest encampment near Rowland Hall, according to a campuswide message sent Friday by Chancellor Howard Gillman. “I am very grateful that our student protesters have helped ensure that the encampment remains peaceful and minimally disruptive of university activities ... and that there appears to have been no conduct that violates the rights of any other member of the campus community to have an equal educational experience free from discrimination and harassment,” Gillman wrote. But “the continued presence of the encampment is deeply troubling, not only because it violates important and common-sense policies, but also because of the unease it causes many in our community in light of the unfortunate developments that have unfolded at other universities. I encourage all members of our community to help us maintain a peaceful, non-disruptive, harassment-free environment while we work toward a resolution.”

The creative pros behind the curtain

Pam Marsden

If you ask Pam Marsden for a teacup, she has a few follow-up questions: Does it have a saucer? Is it chipped? Is it a restaurant mug? “There are a thousand questions that have to be answered, and every one of those choices will tell you something about the character who’s using it,” says Marsden, a former flight attendant who now serves as prop master for stage productions at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts. “Even if an audience member doesn’t realize it, they’re subliminally getting a message through these visual cues.” Marsden is part of the creative team that works behind the scenes on UC Irvine plays, operas, musicals and dance productions.
