ZotGPT now available to students
Students now have access to ZotGPT Chat, Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot – UCI's official generative AI programs supported by the Office of Information Technology. Remember: Always use AI-generated content ethically and transparently, and follow instructor guidelines if using it for coursework. If you're unsure whether or how your instructor wants you to use AI, ask. If you represent AI-generated content as your own original work, this can qualify as academic misconduct and may have consequences for your student status. (Staff and faculty gained access to the AI suite earlier this year.)

Study shows how dreams process negative experiences
UC Irvine Sleep and Cognition Lab researchers have found the first evidence that dreams prioritize negative memories over neutral ones to reduce next-day emotional response to those experiences. The study involved 125 women – 75 via Zoom and 50 at the Sleep and Cognition Lab – who were in their mid-30s and part of a larger study on the effects of the menstrual cycle on sleep. Participants who reported dreaming were less reactive to negative images over neutral ones, a pattern that was absent in those who didn’t remember dreaming. Additionally, the more positive the dream, the more positively that individual rated negative images the next day.

Campus encampment update
In a Monday letter to the UCI community, Chancellor Howard Gillman said the impasse over an encampment in front of Rowland Hall hasn’t changed in the past week. “We remain eager and willing to talk to the encampers so that we can arrive at a peaceful conclusion of this situation and prevent the protesters from having to experience the most serious consequences for their actions,” Gillman said. “As always, I urge all members of the campus community to act in ways that maintain the peace of the campus and our ability to continue with our work, and I urge members of the broader public to take no steps that threaten the safety or well-being of our students, faculty, and staff.”

Could a cash-for-clunkers program reduce plane emissions?
Although the newest jets produce 80% fewer carbon emissions, older planes normally continue to fly for years. To change that dynamic, economics professor Jan K. Brueckner and other researchers propose paying airlines to scrap older aircraft that would otherwise be sold on the used-plane market. In a paper analyzing the feasibility of such a program, the authors suggest that, if designed correctly, it would more than pay for itself in reduced carbon emissions.

Methalox rocket team aims to break world record
Students behind the UC Irvine Rocket Project have set their sights high — 13,205 feet in the air, to be precise. That’s the collegiate world record for a methalox rocket launch, and the group is determined to break it. The Rocket Project’s Liquids Team, which was just featured in a roundup of University of California clubs, is one of only a handful of undergraduate engineering teams working with methalox, a “fuel of the future” composed primarily of liquid natural gas and liquid oxygen. Methalox differs from other propellants because it can be produced even on Mars, opening the door for refueling “pit stops” on future space missions.

Alumna gears up for races on super-fast bike
Amy Dunford ’14, M.S. ’16, is breaking records racing the world’s fastest gasoline-powered 350cc pushrod motorcycle. The mechanical and aerospace engineering alumna rides and co-owns the Red Baron, a supercharged 1985 Moto Morini motorcycle, along with her mentor Robert “Smitty” Smith, a volunteer adviser for Anteater Racing. The Red Baron team is part of the Southern California Timing Association Gear Grinders land speed racing club. This past season the Red Baron finished second in the SCTA Motorcycle Championship, and the bike’s 2024 race season will kick off at El Mirage Dry Lake on Saturday.
