UCI Podcast: Exploring psychosis, stigma, inclusion, well-being

UCI Podcast: Exploring psychosis, stigma, inclusion, well-being
Jason Schiffman, a professor of psychological science, heads a research team that has published over 200 scientific articles and acquired more than $15 million in funding for its work on psychosis. He also trains and consults at clinics across the county on best practices for supporting people with psychosis. In this episode of the UCI Podcast, Schiffman explains the meaning of psychosis, why it still carries a stigma, and how UC Irvine is addressing that problem with its new Psychological Services Center.

Ultra-thin crystals could enhance electronics

Ultra-thin crystals could enhance electronics
Using the scientific equivalent of a tortilla press, UC Irvine physicists created a new method to make super-thin crystals of the element bismuth – a process that may aid the manufacturing of cheap, flexible electronics. The bismuth sheets are only a few nanometers thick, and theorists predict the material could become magnetic when electricity flows through it – essential for quantum electronic devices based on the magnetic spin of electrons. Quantum oscillations were first discovered in bismuth in the 1930s, but have never been seen in nanometer-thin bismuth crystals.

Student explores Native Hawaiian health disparities

Ally Tokioka

Third-year sociology major Ally Tokioka is investigating whether the health disparities faced by Native Hawaiians have social causes. Her research involves historical trauma, a theory that says stress and trauma not only impact those who directly experience it, but future generations as well. She intends to analyze how the colonization and annexation of Hawaii has affected island natives’ physical and mental health. “I hope to be able to reach a conclusion that might better explain and expand on existing literature,” Tokioka says. “I have an opportunity, through further research, to make discoveries or come to new conclusions that could potentially contribute to closing the gap.”
