Memory Air sleep device named ‘genius invention’
Our sense of smell has unmatched power to evoke memories – but as we age, we lose sensitivity to aromas, a shift that’s linked to cognitive decline and depression. In a 2023 study, Michael Leon, now a professor emeritus of neurobiology and behavior, and his research team diffused distinctive scents into the bedrooms of older adults while they slept. The participants reaped a 226 percent increase in cognitive capacity compared to the control group. With these results in hand, Leon founded Memory Air, a company that manufactures diffusers that release a variety of scents throughout the night to bring the benefits of this research to consumers.

#IamUCI: Laken Race ’24, B.S., nursing science
It wasn’t until her fourth-year preceptorship course that Laken Race knew critical care nursing was the ideal career for her. During the 120 hours of direct patient care under the supervision of a licensed, experienced nurse, she began to analyze clinical decisions and evaluate nonclinical aspects of care such as emotional support and social impacts. After graduation, Race will sit for the nursing board exam to earn her license and then apply to residency programs with a specialty in critical care.
#IamUCI: Josie Fermin ’24, B.A., public health policy, minor in criminology, law & society
Josie Ann Fermin’s passion for public health started when her grandmother was diagnosed with diabetes, a condition she believes was accelerated by social determinants that could be mitigated by improving public health policy. This insight guided Fermin to concentrate on the prevention and management of noncommunicable diseases. She plans to pursue a Master of Public Health in child and maternal health and a role as a hospital social worker.
#IamUCI: Curtis Hu ’24, B.S., pharmaceutical sciences, B.A., business economics
Curtis Hu’s career path was shaped by his upbringing in a family of doctors, with roots in a Taipei, Taiwan, clinic blending Eastern and Western medicine. These early experiences sparked his interest in both healthcare and business. Currently, Hu assists in a research project at UC Irvine’s BioTherapeutics Engineering Laboratory that focuses on improving gene therapy by encapsulating adeno-associated virus vectors with extracellular vesicles. After graduating, he plans to further his expertise at Northwestern University with a master’s in biotechnology.
