Discovery may improve melanoma treatment

Researchers have identified a new strategy that could enhance the effectiveness of a widely used melanoma therapy by targeting the communication between immune cells within the tumor. “Checkpoint immunotherapy” has become the standard of care for metastatic melanoma. While this treatment is effective in 40 percent of patients, the other 60 percent develop resistance, leading to tumor regrowth. “Our work helped identify a reason why some patients treated with checkpoint blockade develop resistance to it,” said Shannon Geels, a graduate student researcher in the Department of Physiology & Biophysics. “We found that communication between cells can lead to immunotherapy failure and that we can improve efficacy by interrupting specific messages exchanged by immune cells.” The next phase of the research involves understanding the complex communication network among various cell types in a tumor.

UAW strike update

On Friday, June 7, a Superior Court judge granted the University of California a temporary restraining order that halts the systemwide strike by UAW-represented employees for the next 20 days, beginning immediately. A preliminary injunction hearing on the strike has been set for June 27. “We are grateful that the strike has been stopped for the end of the academic year, allowing our students to successfully complete their quarter,” said Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Hal Stern. “Thank you for your support during this difficult process, and we will send you more information as we receive it.” The UC Office of the President is sharing information on UC Net, and more updates will be available on the continuity website. #IamUCI: Ashlynn Desco ’24, B.A., psychological science

After taking an introductory course at Saddleback College, Ashlynn Desco transferred to UC Irvine so she could pursue a degree in psychological science. As a first-generation college student, Desco was initially overwhelmed by all the opportunities the campus had to offer, but she quickly immersed herself in research as an assistant to Professor Joanne Zinger, who specializes in meta-analysis and the psychology of language. Desco is also working with director and associate editor Simon Cole on the National Registry of Exonerations. Following graduation, she hopes to gain further experience in the research field before applying to graduate programs in social or cognitive psychology.

#IamUCI: Anthony Smart Jr. ’24, B.A., English

A New Orleans native, Anthony Smart Jr. has spent the last three years at UC Irvine perfecting his writing skills. “I’ve always been a writer,” he says. “It’s a God-given talent, but I wanted to see how far I could take it if I learned from the best.” After graduation, Smart plans to spend a year in Japan teaching English and hopes to pursue a Ph.D. when he returns. Meanwhile, he’s exploring creative writing, with the eventual goals of crafting movie scripts for Hollywood, publishing his poetry and writing novels.
