Nearly half of graduating seniors are first-generation college students
Forty-nine percent of the bachelor’s degrees being awarded this academic year will go to first-generation college students. The graduation data also validates UCI’s continued status as a Hispanic-serving institution, a federal designation awarded to universities where at least a quarter of undergraduates identify as Latino and at least half of all students get financial aid. This year, UC Irvine will grant bachelor’s degrees to 2,227 Latinos, a number that has steadily increased for the past decade.

Chancellor and provost’s message on campus harassment
Chancellor Gillman and Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Hal Stern issued a statement Monday reiterating UC Irvine’s commitment to a harassment-free campus. “People who attend a university in a free society must be tolerant of diverse viewpoints,” Gillman and Stern said. “We urge all faculty, staff and students to help end targeted intimidation within our community by reporting incidents of hate and notifying authorities when witnessing crimes and violations of university policies.” Anyone who has experienced discrimination or harassment should report it to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, they added. Additionally, more general bias, intolerance, and campus climate concerns can be reported via the campus climate reporting hotline.

UC Irvine senior among UC transfer success stories
Out of some 61,000 graduates in the UC’s Class of 2024, close to a third started their higher ed journey at a California community college. Among them is UC Irvine’s Tatyana Hazelwood, who transferred from Palomar College in San Marcos and is receiving her bachelor’s degree in psychological science and criminology, law & society. “Throughout K–12, I just felt unworthy compared to my peers,” she says. “In community college I earned a 4.0, but I felt like an imposter. But when I got to UC Irvine, I was able to let that go. It was a clean slate, and that allowed me to just soak up the experience and see how successful I could be. It has shifted my entire relationship with school and turned it into a great sense of pride and belonging.”

#IamUCI: Valentina Toledano ’24, B.A., political science, B.A., language science, minor in anthropology
Growing up in Santa Ana, Valentina Toledano noticed that despite the city’s diverse population, most community-based spaces reflected a Eurocentric point of view. Through her work at museums, Toledano wants to highlight the narratives and experiences of marginalized identities. “Eurocentric curatorial practices have dominated the U.S. for many centuries,” she says. “But now there’s a shift in emerging artists and curators who want to make art galleries and museums more community-based.” After graduation, Toledano will continue her work at Crear Studio, an art gallery in Santa Ana that focuses on emerging artists in minority communities. In the future, she plans to seek a Ph.D. in anthropology and eventually work as a museum director.
