UC Irvine leads nationwide anti-bullying study

UC Irvine leads nationwide anti-bullying study led by Marizen Ramirez, a professor of environmental & occupational health
Bullying is one of the most common forms of youth violence and can lead to myriad adverse long-term consequences for victims. To understand this, a team led by Marizen Ramirez, a professor of environmental & occupational health, created the most comprehensive dataset of anti-bullying legislation in the U.S. The data suggests disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic are possibly related to a recent decline in face-to-face bullying. “By tracking policy changes and improvements over time, we can ultimately determine what works and what doesn’t work in reducing bullying and its adverse effects on children,” Ramirez said. “This type of information is exactly what schools and state departments of education need.”

With a five-year, $1.4 million National Institutes of Health grant, the Center for Neural Circuit Mapping will establish a training program for Alzheimer’s disease research. An interdisciplinary team of 29 faculty members will mentor and support student trainees, employing state-of-the-art approaches to expand the mechanistic understanding of brain disorders through neural circuit mapping. From above left, they include: Chen Li, Xiaoyu Shi, Kalpna Gupta, Gopi Meenakshisundaram, Orkide Koyuncu, Mark Fisher, Xiangmin Xu, Christine Gall, Todd Holmes, Kei Igarashi, Zhaoxia Yu, Kevin Beier and Gregory Brewer. “The program will emphasize the development of novel tools and methodologies for early detection, diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias,” said principal investigator Xiangmin Xu, Chancellor’s Professor of anatomy & neurobiology and director of the CNCM.

#IamUCI: Nikhil Koka ’24, M.S., business analytics

When Nikhil Koka began studying business administration during his undergraduate years, he realized that he could still enjoy his lifelong passion for storytelling if he worked in business analytics. “When looking at data points, you kind of get a lot of jumbled numbers and values that might mean nothing when just looking at it,” Koka said. “But when you start to see a trend, it paints a picture. When you dive into the data, it tells a story about what’s really going on. Then we can try to replicate trends and create an impact.” After earning his master’s degree, Koka plans to work in music streaming, sports or healthcare.

#IamUCI: Michael J. Donaldson ’24, M.A., teaching

Michael J. Donaldson spent 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, but helping his son with math homework during the COVID-19 pandemic led him to think about changing careers. He retired from the military and applied to the School of Education, where he will receive his master’s degree in teaching during this weekend’s commencement ceremonies. Donaldson also hopes to give back to the campus’ veteran community, which has supported him as he navigates the transition from the military to education. “UCI has a great veterans organization that helped me figure out how to use my veterans benefits to aid my education,” he says. “I’m really thankful for what they’ve done, and it’s something that I want to give back to later on.”
