Anteater Time Machine: In October 1966, the Anthill newspaper, a predecessor to New University, reported that musician Jose Feliciano would return to campus for a performance. Tickets to the show were $2.25, but only $1 for students.

Social sciences and law schools announce joint scholarship

The School of Law and the School of Social Sciences are offering the latter school’s students access to an accelerated bachelor’s/juris doctor degree pathway, along with substantial scholarship funds. Both schools boast faculty who excel in interdisciplinary work — from UCI Law’s socio-legal and environmental law scholars to the School of Social Sciences’ researchers on behavioral economics and cognitive neuroscience. Qualified recipients will receive $90,000 over three years at the School of Law and, if enrolled in the 3+3 pathway, could earn their bachelor’s and juris doctorate degrees in six years, as opposed to the traditional seven.

Engineering graduate program ranks high in U.S. News

The Henry Samueli School of Engineering received its highest ranking ever in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2024-25 list of best graduate schools. The school is ranked 17th among the nation’s public universities and 31st overall among 199 public and private institutions. This represents an increase of three places from last year’s rating. The annual rankings are based on peer assessments of program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research and students.

The newly released Spring 2024 edition of UC Irvine Magazine explores how the university's research addresses issues ranging from dementia to environmental justice. Highlights include efforts to reduce unsafe lead levels in Santa Ana, studies linking the sense of smell with memory to combat dementia and bumblebee research that may impact human health. Additionally, cultural anthropologist Mimi Ito discusses AI's societal effects, and a pictorial feature showcases the Ecological Preserve.

Engineering student heading to Lucasfilm after graduation

Mechanical engineering senior Crew Parker (above) is heading to Lucasfilm after he graduated last week. This month, he hosted the premiere of Meridian, a 35-minute sci-fi film he wrote, filmed and directed. Most of the cast are his fellow engineering students. He believes the arts and engineering are closely connected. He recently spoke with the Henry Samueli School of Engineering about how he got his start in film, his background in mechanical engineering, his latest project and his love of Star Wars.
