Student-designed modular home moving to homeless center

Award-winning modular home designed by UC Irvine and Orange Coast College students
The Homeless Intervention Services of Orange County is preparing to move into their backyard the award-winning modular home designed by UC Irvine and Orange Coast College students. The home won second place at the Orange County Sustainability Decathlon for its innovative features and was donated to the center by the student team. This 750-square foot home will enable the center to raise their capacity from nine beds to 17 beds for at-risk youth between 18 to 24 years old. Since 2020, the program has helped 165 youths traumatized by abandonment, homelessness, sex trafficking, addiction and other challenges.

New Swan Shakespeare Festival returns

The New Swan Theater will commence its 11th live season next month, with performances at 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays from July 9 to Aug. 31. Each year, the New Swan Shakespeare Festival presents one comedy and one drama. For 2024, the offerings are “Twelfth Night, or What You Will,” directed by Eli Simon; and “Measure for Measure,” directed by Beth Lopes. A single ensemble of students, alumni and guest artists appears in each.

Summer library resources

UCI Libraries resources will continue to be available for students, staff and faculty throughout the summer. Online workshops are available, and a collection of ebooks can be found on Overdrive. The video-streaming service Kanopy also has two summer film collections: Summer Reading From Book to Screen and Best of Summer. Kanopy and additional film streaming services remain free for UC Irvine affiliates. Learn how you can stream media for free, see what’s provided on the Streaming Media Research Guide, and keep up with current events through UCI Libraries free news access. Emergency resources from UC’s benefit plans

During the summer break, all UC faculty, staff and students are invited to visit UCNet’s emergency resource page for help in replacing lost prescriptions; seeking medical, dental or vision care; receiving emotional health support; filing claims for loss of life or property or disability; accessing your retirement savings for emergency expenses; and other benefits. If you need extra assistance during a natural disaster or another emergency, please contact your plan directly.

Individual nurses and nursing teams at UCI Health and the UCI Health Community Network were recently celebrated with DAISY Awards for demonstrating excellence in patient care. Awardees included the UCI Health cardiovascular intensive care unit team at UCI Medical Center (above); six nurses from UCI Health ― Lakewood; Karly Kodzis, a nurse in the UCI Health ― Fountain Valley ICU; Alex Martin-Senecal, a nurse in the intensive care unit at UCI Health ― Los Alamitos; and Amy Vo, an ICU nurse at UCI Health ― Placentia Linda.
