In this video, Vice Chancellor and Chief Digital Officer Tom Andriola talks with key stakeholders of Compass, UC Irvine’s data-driven student success program. Together, they look back on the past year and discuss the challenges, wins and progress they’ve made in continuing to expand Compass across campus. 23 incarcerated individuals graduate through the LIFTED program

On June 20, the inaugural graduation ceremony of UC Irvine’s degree program for incarcerated individuals took place inside San Diego’s Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility. Twenty-three participants of the LIFTED program earned their bachelor’s degrees after starting coursework in fall 2022. For the past two years, faculty from social ecology, social sciences, arts, business, humanities, law, education and engineering committed to teaching LIFTED students during quarter-long, in-person courses on topics ranging from politics, law and society to philosophy, literature and science.

Health expert argues for universal screening for childhood trauma

According to a 2019 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, many negative health effects are linked to adverse childhood experiences, including depression, obesity, heart disease and substance abuse. UCI Health family medicine physician Dr. Charles Vega argues that clinicians are an important link in the prevention and management of these adverse outcomes.

University of California statement on California budget
On June 29, UC President Michael V. Drake issued a statement on California’s 2024-25 budget. “This is a challenging budget year for California, and we appreciate the way in which Governor Newsom and the Legislature have navigated tough decisions,” Drake said. “We will work with the Governor and the Legislature to ensure that we continue to strive for these objectives in future years. An investment in the University of California is an investment in California’s economic growth, socioeconomic mobility and innovative research to meet the world’s growing challenges.”

Elevating African American art song

This month, Darryl Taylor, a professor of music in the Claire Trevor School of the Arts will receive an honor from the National Association of Negro Musicians. This accolade recognizes Taylor's remarkable achievements in music, his dedication to social service and the significant impact of his organization, the African American Art Song Alliance. Through this alliance, Taylor continues to elevate the contributions of African Americans from the art song genre, whether as composers, performers or scholars. He recently spoke about the alliance and African American art song’s rich history.
