Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center opening

Rendering of Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center
On July 16, the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care Building will open. Part of the $1.3 billion UCI Health — Irvine medical complex on the west edge campus along Jamboree Road, the center will effectively triple the health system's capacity to serve cancer patients. The cancer center is one of only 57 in the U.S. to earn a comprehensive rating from the prestigious National Cancer Institute. “This will be huge for patients,” said Dr. Richard A. Van Etten, director of the cancer center and an associate vice chancellor of the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences. “It will expand access to the latest in cancer care, clinical trials and research, and bring it all closer to people living in coastal and southern Orange County.”

New computational language science program

The School of Social Sciences and Division of Continuing Education have launched a post-baccalaureate program in computational language science. The program aims to fill a gap in training for students interested in careers or graduate studies in computational linguistics. The eight-course series covers development in programming skills, computational modeling, probability, writing, machine learning and theory.

UC researchers warn of statewide beach erosion

Sandy beach
The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that California could lose three-quarters of its beaches by 2100, which is why UC researchers including Brett Sanders, a professor of civil and environmental engineering who directs UC Irvine’s Flood Lab, are issuing a warning about the danger to wildlife and the loss of a natural buffer from flooding, erosion and other natural disasters for millions of California residents. “We’ve dammed up most of our rivers, and dams retain a lot of sediment,” Sanders said. “Most of the beach erosion now we're seeing in Southern California is from decades of sand starvation.”

Astrobiologist Aomawa Shields explores exoplanets

Aomawa Shields, an associate professor of physics and astronomy

Aomawa Shields, an associate professor of physics and astronomy, uses climate change modeling software to study evidence of the possibility for extraterrestrial life on distant so-called exoplanets. Shields, who is just one of 26 women African-American astrophysicists in the U.S., also founded the nonprofit organization Rising Stargirls to help young girls from diverse backgrounds comprehend the cosmos by using theater, writing and visual arts. “We are on the cusp of being able to capture images of smaller exoplanets, which could revolutionize our understanding of these distant worlds,” she said. “There are still many limits to what we can see and do, but we are on our way.”
