2024 Commencement Ceremony video
More than 8,200 students and their families participated in commencement ceremonies from June 14 to 17 in the Bren Events Center. Overall, UC Irvine bestowed 11,034 degrees this academic year, with 49% of those receiving bachelor’s degrees being first-generation college students. Said Chancellor Howard Gillman, “This graduating class highlights how well UC Irvine is serving the people of our state by offering a world-class education to the best and brightest students, regardless of their financial circumstances, and acting as a powerful engine of upward economic mobility.” (Video: Steve Chang / UC Irvine)

Study helps solve ocean temperature mystery

An international research team that includes a UC Irvine scientist has found that bumpy topographical features along the sloping ocean floor contribute significantly to ocean seawater upwelling. Scientists analyzed dye deposited at a sloping suboceanic canyon in the North Atlantic Ocean and found that the rate of upwelling – whereby denser, colder water at lower depths returns to the surface, thereby confounding climate modeling – was about 10,000 times higher than the global average. Henri Drake, an assistant professor of Earth system science, said the study contributes valuable insights for climate scientists hoping to understand the mechanisms governing our planet’s oceans and will help them derive more precise projections of marine impacts on global climate change.

Extreme heat affects mood

If you feel more tired, frustrated and irritable when the temperature creeps past 90 degrees, a survey has confirmed that you’re not alone. A UCI Health family medicine expert explains why our moods change as the heat rises.

Elevating campus data literacy

UC Irvine has launched two initiatives to foster a campus-wide data culture: Compass MAPSS and DataGPS. An MAPSS Interactive Tutorial provides a tutorial on the Compass initiative, while the online MAPSS certificate program allows all staff and faculty the opportunity to improve data and digital literacy skills. The DataGPS practice forum encourages cross-departmental sharing of best practices, tips and tricks, and how units on campus are leveraging data. It will also connect you with colleagues with a shared goal to build a data culture that benefits the entire campus community. More information is available on the Compass Community of Practice website or by emailing compasscop@uci.edu.
