Molecules in Motion exposes chemistry students to dance
The seemingly unrelated disciplines of dance and chemistry recently combined in an event titled "Club Lab Freestyle: Molecules in Motion” at Claire Trevor School of the Arts dance studios. Spearheaded by three distinguished UC Irvine scholars – from left, above: Gregory Weiss, a professor of molecular biology and biochemistry, S. Ama Wray, a professor of dance, and Cyrian Reed, an associate professor of dance – the lab allowed students to create and reinterpret chemical reactions through movement, invoking creativity, exploring diverse teaching methodologies and representing molecules in a tangible form. It’s also the culmination of a two-year project developed under UC Irvine’s Chancellor’s Arts & Culture Initiative, Illuminations, which ensures that all students, regardless of their major, have meaningful exposure to the arts. For most chemistry students, this event marked their first time on the arts campus.

Drummer beats back kidney cancer in clinical trial
When drummer Glenn Marquez was approached about participating in a clinical trial to treat his advanced kidney cancer, he was exhausted and skeptical of more therapy. With his family’s encouragement and support, he enrolled. Today, his cancer is under control, and he once again has the energy to pursue his musical passion. “The standard-of-care treatment only gave him a few months of disease control,” said UCI Health medical oncologist Dr. Arash Rezazadeh. “Just because we call it ‘standard of care,’ that doesn’t mean it’s the best treatment. It’s just what’s available. We can offer clinical trials, which can go beyond that.”

Grant will fund groundbreaking study of HIV transmission in war-torn Ukraine
A groundbreaking UC Irvine study focusing on HIV transmission in Ukraine among forcibly displaced men who have sex with men has recently been awarded a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Led by Tetyana Vasylyeva, an assistant professor of population health and disease prevention at the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health, the study aims to delve into the public health challenges faced by this vulnerable community in a region affected by war. Results produced from this study will help to contribute to a deeper understanding of how to properly support this vulnerable population and potentially curb the spread of HIV in Ukraine and in other similar settings globally.

A total of 103 University of California athletes are competing in 27 sports and representing 31 different nations and five UC campuses at the Summer Olympic Games in Paris. Among the Anteaters in Paris are Dave Durden (above, center) a UC Irvine alum and UC Berkeley head swim coach who is now the assistant coach for Team USA. On the men’s volleyball team is UC Irvine alum David Smith, who is making his fourth Olympic appearance – one of only four players in U.S. history to do so – and fellow alum Kevin Tillie, who is playing with France’s fourth-ranked men’s volleyball team.

Summer program helps first generation scholars find graduate schools
This July, the School of Social Sciences Summer Academic Enrichment Program held a five-week, intensive program to help students apply to graduate school. Among the program’s 31st cohort is senior Maribel Santana Alvarez (above), a Chicano/Latino studies and Spanish double major who transferred to UC Irvine after years of working in the restaurant industry. In addition to being a full-time student and mother who commutes two hours each way from the Inland Empire, she works three days a week as a “completion coach” at her former community college. After she graduates in June, Alvarez plans to apply to Ph.D. programs in ethnic studies or in social sciences with an emphasis in Chicano/Latino studies. Her current research focuses on how mental health content on social media is perceived in the Latino community.

Another student making strides in this year’s cohort is senior James Paredes (above), a quadruple major in political science, business economics, social ecology, and criminology, law & society. Paredes was born in the San Fernando Valley but spent the first few years of his life in Mexico before returning to California. He attended Grover Cleveland Charter High School in Reseda where he graduated as valedictorian. Paredes hopes that SAEP will provide him with a solid foundation for pursuing a career in higher education.
