UC Irvine admits record number of Californians

A record number of in-state first-year and transfer students have been offered admission to UC Irvine for the fall 2024 quarter. More than 19,000 California high school graduates were offered admission, 1,500 more than last year’s record amount. Another 9,000 students from the state’s community colleges were offered transfers, an increase of more than 400 from last year. In addition, UC Irvine is offering admission to 7,100 first-generation, in-state first-year students and 7,250 in-state first-year students from underrepresented groups.

UC Irvine physician appointed president of Orange County Medical Association

Pain management specialist Dr. Shalini Shah has been appointed president of the Orange County Medical Association, becoming the first UCI Health physician to serve in that position. "In the 135 years of the OCMA organization, this is the first time that a UCI physician has held the role leading O.C.'s healthcare mission as president of the organization,” Shah said. “This role underscores the high level of expertise and dedication that UCI Health physicians bring to our community every day and where we are going in the future.”

Probing the salt intake-sleep connection

Salt is essential for the human body to function properly and to maintain the correct proportions of water and minerals, but studies indicate that too much or too little can interfere with sleep. UCI Health internist Dr. Jaclyn Leong recently explained how to strike the right balance for optimal health and better sleep.

President Drake announces plans to step down

On July 31, UC President and former UC Irvine Chancellor Michael V. Drake announced that he is stepping down from his position at the end of the 2024-25 academic year and that following a sabbatical, he intends to return to the faculty. “I am immensely proud of what our students, faculty and staff have accomplished these past several years. You have weathered a global pandemic and historic natural disasters, dealt with international conflict and domestic political uncertainty, [and] navigated the stresses and opportunities of daily life, all while making our university stronger, more resilient, more impactful and more inclusive than ever before,” Drake said. “It has been my honor to serve as your president.”

Kathleen Schmidt receives infusion treatment on newly opened Clemons Family Infusion Terrace

UCI Health ― Irvine marked a milestone when Kathleen Schmidt became the first patient to receive infusion treatment on the newly opened Clemons Family Infusion Terrace at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building. "Providing a healing and comforting environment is crucial in cancer care," said Dr. Emad Elquza, physician in chief at the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. "This terrace allows us to deliver advanced treatments in a setting that supports the overall well-being of our patients."
