New civil rights and law center opens on campus

Robert S. Chang, a professor of law
On July 1, the Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality opened at UC Irvine, some 15 years after it was established at the Seattle University School of Law by founder and director Robert S. Chang, a professor of law who also joined the UC Irvine faculty last month. Transitioning to UC Irvine will allow the center to expand its mission of aiding communities fighting for racial equality and social justice. “Irvine’s commitment to public interest and social justice initiatives aligns perfectly with our mission,” Chang said. “Establishing a racial justice clinic integrated into the law school curriculum ensures continuity and expands our capacity to effect change.”

An audit of 1,627 businesses within 12 cities showed a larger percentage of residents in a majority Asian neighborhood who had received an annual checkup and fewer current smokers in both majority Asian and majority Hispanic areas when there were more SCIs.
