In the latest episode of The UCI Podcast, Jessica Borelli, a professor of psychological science, offers insight on the array of reactions that accompany this time of year, and she shares tips on how families can embrace the change together and make it as smooth as possible for all involved.

Scientists create material that can take the temperature of nanoscale objects

UC Irvine chemists recently discovered a one-dimensional nanoscale material whose color changes as temperature changes. According to Dmitri Cordova (above), a postdoctoral scholar involved in the research, industries already have optical thermometers they use when fabricating computer components, but the team’s new material is “at least an order of magnitude more sensitive.” “We found that we can make really small and sensitive thermometers,” said Maxx Arguilla, a professor of chemistry whose research group led the study. “It’s one of the most applied and translatable works to come out of our lab.”

In 2016, Kelly Hyde suffered the first of many seizures that after several years led her to UCI Health’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, where doctors were able to perform a successful temporal lobectomy for her drug-resistant condition. This digital session, which will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22 at noon, will provide strategies and resources for cultivating a healthier campus climate for political learning. Alex Kappus, account executive for student success at Credo Higher Education Consulting, will share practical implications of his research reviewing institutional responses to the Student Civic and Voter Empowerment Act (A.B. 963), examining the nature and scope of efforts across the UC, CSU and community college systems.

Nursing school hosts summer camp for high school students

UCI SON Nursing Camp

The Sue and Bill Gross School of Nursing recently celebrated a successful summer camp to inspire the next generation of nursing professionals. After a two-year hiatus, the highly anticipated camp resumed last summer in its newly accredited Simulation Center. Over two sessions, 62 high school students participated, with attendees hailing from as far as Taiwan, Washington state and Northern California. The goal of the camp was to provide an engaging introduction to the nursing profession and promote it to young individuals interested in pursuing a healthcare career.
