Sociologist highlights inequality for students with disabilities

UCI sociology professor Andrew Penner

A multi-university study to help students with disabilities succeed is relying on data collected by UCI sociology professor Andrew Penner (above) and the UCI Center for Administrative Data Analysis. The research team will be among the first to identify how school-based programming for students with disabilities can lead to a better life as adults. The comprehensive data will allow investigators to expand to more general and longer-term outcomes like jobs and income, building a family, living independently, and staying out of the criminal legal system.

UC Board of Regents honor Olympians and Paralympians

Tara Prentice, UC Irvine water polo athlete

At the Sept. 18-19 UC Board of Regents meeting, UC Olympians and Paralympians were invited to share their reflections on the Summer Games in Paris. Eight UC athletes spoke, including Tara Prentice (above, smiling), a former Anteater water polo player. “When I entered UC Irvine, both my parents had never even gone to college, and I didn’t know what I wanted to achieve in college,” Prentice said. “I ended up leaving with two master’s and two undergraduate degrees. I don’t say that to say, ‘Look at me,’ but when you put yourself in such positive environments and allow yourself to be a dreamer and let yourself be inspired by those around you, they really can see something in you that you potentially don’t see in yourself. That’s the greatest gift the UC system, and especially UC Irvine, gave to me.”

Highschoolers envision future college careers during campus visit

Jeanett Castellanos, a social sciences associate dean of instruction and curriculum

In late August, 25 students from Santa Ana Valley High School visited the UC Irvine campus to explore majors and undergraduate resources within the School of Social Sciences. As part of the quarterly Choosing a Major Conference series –an initiative spearheaded by the Center for Educational Partnerships and their Early Academic Outreach Program – the event offered a comprehensive look into UC Irvine’s largest academic unit, which houses some of the most popular undergraduate majors on campus. “The School of Social Sciences is vast, offering a wide array of majors and programs,” said Jeanett Castellanos (above), a social sciences associate dean of instruction and curriculum. “Providing an early glimpse into these options is key to helping students envision their academic and professional futures.”
