Recognizing Latino Physician Day

Dozens of physicians and medical students in the School of Medicine took part in Latino Physician Day on Tuesday, joining a nationwide effort to raise awareness about the lack of Latinos in medicine. “Here in our state of California, approximately 40% of the population is Latino or identifies that way,” said Dr. José Mayorga, executive director for UCI Health Family Health Centers. “And only 6% of physicians identify as Latino.” That disparity is expected to grow even larger as California’s Latino population is projected to grow to 50% by the year 2050. The lack of representation contributes to significant health care barriers, inequalities and poorer outcomes in the Latino/Hispanic population, according to doctors.

More evidence shown of vaping’s health risks

A new study co-led by researchers including Michael Kleinman, an adjunct professor of environmental & occupational health, reveals that vaping can interfere with the normal coupling between blood flow and pressure as blood is pumped from the heart to the arteries. The findings add to evidence that vaping can contribute to heart disease, one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

Family factors impact breast cancer treatment for minority patients

Sora Tanjasiri, associate director of Cancer Health Disparities and Community Engagement at the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, said family duties and costs are among the factors that drive care decisions among women of Asian descent.
