23rd annual Irvine Global Village Festival

Irvine Global Village Festival demonstration

The 23rd annual Irvine Global Village Festival took place Oct. 5, at the Great Park, providing an opportunity for UC Irvine to bring a bit of the university directly to the people of Irvine. Participants included UCI Mind, Orange County’s only state- and federally funded Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, members of UC Irvine Athletics, and representatives from the UCI Chemistry Academy, a summer STEM program for K-12 students. OC’s only academic health system, UCI Health, also had a large role in the festivities, sharing information about the many offerings and services they provide to patients. See more photos from the event below.

New technology may help treat port-wine birthmarks

A UC Irvine-led study found that a technology known as optical coherence tomography has potential to treat port-wine birthmarks, but the procedure needs to become more efficient before it can be used for patient care. According to UCI Health dermatologist Dr. Kristen M. Kelly, the technology shows promise in measuring the size and number of the birthmark’s vessels, which would help fine-tune laser treatments to reduce their visibility.
