For a recent study on how low-dose exposure to penetrating forms of ionizing radiation contributes to cancer risk, David Richardson, a professor of environmental and occupational health at the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health, assembled a cohort of more than 300,000 radiation-monitored workers from France, the United Kingdom and the United States, employed at nuclear facilities between 1944 and 2016. The study revealed a potentially fatal cancer risk from prolonged low-dose exposure to ionizing radiation and mortality from these blood cancers. While the risk remains low at low exposure levels, future radiation studies are needed to boost occupational radiation protection on a global scale.
