PRIME-LC turns 20

This fall, the Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community welcomed its 20th class to the School of Medicine. PRIME-LC was revolutionary in medical education; the dual-degree program was the nation’s first to provide a unique medical training experience designed to meet the increasing demand for physicians and public health leaders who could address the distinct needs of Latinos. Starting with a class of eight, the program has so far graduated 172 students and has led to the creation of PRIME programs at other UC medical schools, including PRIME LEAD-ABC at UC Irvine, which focuses on developing physician-leaders committed to serving African, Black, and Caribbean communities. In celebration of its 20th anniversary, several distinguished alumni share their stories.

UC Irvine campus vaccination deadlines, campus clinics available

UC policy requires employees and students to provide an attestation or declination of receiving the flu vaccine by Nov. 1 and for the COVID-19 vaccine by Dec. 6. Students can upload their attestations or declinations at the Student Health Portal and employees can upload theirs at the Occupational Health Portal. UC Irvine continues to partner with Albertsons and Ralphs pharmacies to bring vaccinations to campus. These clinics are open to students, staff, faculty, other academic personnel, retirees and community members. And for the first time, Kaiser members will be able to receive the flu vaccine at these campus clinics.

An innovation in inclusive language

Alana LeBrón, associate professor of health, society & behavior

Alana LeBrón, an associate professor of health, society & behavior in the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health, shares her perspective on using ‘Latiné’ as a gender-neutral, culturally sensitive alternative to ‘Latino’ and ‘Latinx’ to foster inclusivity in public health research. “Recognizing that labels are always changing, I have leaned into the term ‘Latiné’ designed as a gender-neutral term and one that can easily be pronounced in both English and Spanish language, LeBrón said. “I encourage us to work in partnership with Latiné-identifying communities to understand the racial terms best aligned with individual and community identities and practices.”

@ucirvinepd posted on Instagram: It’s UCI Ring Road – not Mad Max: Fury Road. Tell your squad: UCI police officers are out enforcing e-scooter and bicycle rules on Ring Road. We see you. Flying by like you’re in the Olympic time trials. Those speeds can sadly lead to accidents with pedestrians. Our goal is to make sure everyone gets to class without a trip to a hospital!
