Mexican university delegation visits campus

Dignitaries from Mexico’s Autonomous University of Hidalgo State recently met with campus leadership to identify areas of common academic and research interest. The tour included the laboratory of Donald Blake, professor of chemistry, where research specialist Barbara Barletta (above left), demonstrated the function of an air sampling canister to Dr. Octavio Carrillo Acosta (center), president of Mexico’s Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo, and Jose Luis Sosa, UAEH director of international affairs. One of the leading universities in Latin America, the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo in Central Mexico serves about 65,000 students with 66 graduate degree programs and 67 undergraduate programs.

Korematsu Center for Law and Equality recently moved to the UC Irvine School of Law from Seattle University. In this episode of the UCI Podcast, Aaron Orlowski speaks about the center’s legacy and mission with its director, Bob Chang, a UC Irvine professor of law who brought the center to UCI Law when he joined its faculty this summer.

Ophthalmologists Drs. Jeremiah Tao (above left) and Lilangi Ediriwickrema have developed a customized approach to treating thyroid eye disease. They work closely with a team of specialists to determine the best treatment options, with the ultimate goal of preserving vision. “The treatment landscape is continually evolving,” said Ediriwickrema. “We hope that in the next 10 to 20 years we can offer patients even more options to manage this disease.”

Economics Learning Center marks its 10-year anniversary

The Economics Learning Center launched in 2014 in response to growing enrollment in undergraduate classes and an increasing number of students choosing one of the Department of Economics’ three popular majors. Through peer-assisted and cooperative learning, the more than 8,500 students who’ve visited the center have received individualized attention and help tackling topics from introductory terms to advanced core concepts. Ten years in, the center is thriving with data showing the ELC to be a place where students both learn and build community.
