To make chemicals greener and more efficient, Han Li, (second from left above) an associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, is developing biofuels, foods, cosmetics and commodities using CO2-derived feedstock, which helps neutralize CO2 emissions. Li’s Laboratory of Metabolic Engineering and Synthetic Biology, (which also includes, from left: Yulai Zhang, William Black and Derek Aspacio) is producing technology for biological production that would be much more efficient, low cost and environmental than chemical processes. “As engineers, we want to learn from nature to implement this strategy in a test tube, and to go beyond nature,” said Li.

Injectable weight-loss drug use among youth spark long-term safety concerns

Dr. Dan Cooper

UCI Health pediatrician Dr. Dan Cooper isn’t surprised by the increasing popularity of injectable GLP-1 weight-loss medications, but he is worried about their long-term safety for those under 18. “I’m just very concerned about how we’re using these medications as a quick fix for a complex problem,” said Cooper, who authored a 2023 study about the risks of weight-loss drugs for children, including an increased risk of suicidal ideation.
