| | | | Breast cancer research update |
| | As Breast Cancer Awareness Month winds up, two UCI Health stories highlight the ongoing struggle against this disease. After Suzette Kirby passed away from triple negative breast cancer at the age of 52, her family spent a decade raising funds for medical research. Now they have donated $1 million to support efforts by Devon Lawson, an associate professor of physiology & biophysics, and Kai Kessenbrock, an associate professor of biological chemistry (above right and left), to cure the intractable disease. Meanwhile, after four years on a targeted therapy drug prescribed by Dr. Mohammadbagher Ziari, Barbara Cortez, 52, has seen the stage IV breast cancer that had spread to her bones and liver go into remission. Cortez was 7 years old when the same disease claimed her mother. "When my mother died in 1979, there was absolutely nothing for her,” she said. “This last medication was a gamechanger for me. I wouldn’t have had that opportunity if not for Dr. Ziari." |

If you spot something, report it immediately. While you're monitoring your account activity, you should also check your address, phone, and email to make sure they’re up to date. |

It helps to remember that days between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day are not typically life-altering events. With that in mind, UCI Health psychiatrist Dr. Jody M. Rawles has assembled several helpful tips for avoiding holiday season stress. |

| | It’s been 20 years since the first UC PRIME class started at UC Irvine in 2004, and since then, the program has expanded to every UC medical school campus and graduated nearly a thousand physicians who’ve taken on specialized coursework, hands-on clinical care, research and service, all focused on health equity. One of the program’s early students is Dr. Marco Angulo (above, during Match Day in 2011) who is now medical director for the Institute for Health Equity at AltaMed in Los Angeles, California’s largest federally qualified health center. He was recently profiled by UC News. |

In June, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education bestowed a prestigious Grand Gold award to the school for its inaugural celebration, which was held on Nov. 2, 2023; earlier this month it also won the organization’s Best of District VII Award. More than 1,000 attended the well-received event, which featured dance, musical performances, a student-created altar and a lively concert by the two-time Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Divas. |
