UC Irvine’s Center for Racial Justice group pose in front of wall with graffiti that reads Stop AAPI Hate

Since 2022, the UC Irvine Center for Racial Justice has been working to empower students to combat the negative effects of biases, stereotypes and dehumanization. The campus hub hosts a variety of social justice programs based at UC Irvine and beyond. On Nov. 20, CRJ will hold the first event of a three-part series called “Let’s Talk About Race.” It will feature a lunchtime panel with members of CRJ's faculty advisory board, who will share their experiences and insights. In the winter quarter, CRJ will host a graduate student-oriented event, and one in the spring will focus on undergraduates.

New study links smell loss linked to 139 diseases

Michael Leon

Researchers from the Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences, in collaboration with The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities, have revealed a powerful link between olfactory loss and inflammation in 139 distinct medical conditions. Led by Michael Leon, UC Irvine professor emeritus of neurobiology and behavior, and researchers Cynthia Woo and Emily Troscianko, the new study emphasizes a little-known but potentially life-altering syndrome that can be an early sign of various neurological and bodily diseases. “The data are particularly interesting because we had previously found that olfactory enrichment can improve the memory of older adults by 226 percent,” Leon said. “We now know that pleasant scents can decrease inflammation, potentially pointing to the mechanism by which such scents can improve brain health.”
