The UCI Podcast: Directing biomedical evolution

A professor of biomedical engineering, Chang Liu, is a leader in the field of directed evolution, which trains genes to evolve in a laboratory in order to perform desired functions. Through this method of gene engineering, researchers hope to create new biological substances for use in pharmaceuticals and as cheaper and more environmentally responsible industrial catalysts. The work is also helping the scientific community build genetic knowledge for the benefit of bioengineering. In this episode of The UCI Podcast, Liu discusses the findings from his latest study.

Santiago Chambers (above, in cape), the director of plant operations at UCI Health ― Los Alamitos, has been recognized as a frontline hero by the Los Alamitos Area Chamber of Commerce for his steadfast dedication to the safety of the community. When he isn’t serving his colleagues at the hospital, Chambers, a U.S. Navy veteran, is out in the community, checking car seats and visiting schools and businesses to educate people about earthquake preparedness and safety. “He is truly a beacon of light, lifting everyone around him up,” says UCI Health ― Los Alamitos CEO Kent Clayton.

Día de los Muertos brings lively culture (and crowds) to campus video

More than 1,200 people of all ages converged at the Irvine Barclay Theater on Nov. 4 to celebrate the School of Social Ecology’s second annual Día de los Muertos, a lively event punctuated with mariachi music, dance, ceremony, painted faces and an altar commemorating lost loved ones. The Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Divas headlined the event. They also headlined last year’s event that received the Council for Advancement and Support of Education's prestigious Grand Gold Award as well as the organization’s Best of District VII Award. Other performers at this year’s event included the Ballet Folklorico de UCI, Mariachi Orgullo de UCI, Claudia de la Cruz Flamenco and students from Madison Elementary School of Santa Ana’s Ballet Folklorico and Stoddard Elementary School of Anaheim’s Mariachi.

UC Irvine among four UCs recognized as Fulbright HSIs

UC Irvine among four UCs recognized as Fulbright HSIs

UC Irvine was among four UC campuses recognized by the U.S. Department of State on Nov. 3 as Fulbright Hispanic-Serving Institution Leaders for 2024. The honor is granted to select universities that have both attained Hispanic-serving institution status and feature strong engagement with the Fulbright program, the U.S. government’s flagship international academic exchange program. The four campuses are among an elite group of 29 institutions offering doctoral degrees to receive the distinction. “As a university that pursues the intentional agenda of being open, inclusive and committed to academic excellence and global impact, we are deeply proud of this recognition,” UC Irvine Chancellor Howard Gillman said of the honor from the Fulbright program. “I am grateful to all the faculty, staff and students involved in making UC Irvine a Fulbright HSI leader.”
