California’s traffic safety office awards $1 million to UC Irvine School of Medicine

The UC Irvine School of Medicine has received a $1 million grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to support its Youth Thriving in Life Transitions with Transportation Program. Based in Santa Ana, the program will promote driver education and safe transportation for Latino youth and runs through September 2025. "We are excited to receive this grant," said Dr. Federico Vaca (above), professor and executive vice chair of emergency medicine at UC Irvine's School of Medicine. "By focusing on young driver safety with a lifespan perspective – namely health, education and employment – we aim to help reduce crashes, prevent injuries and expand future opportunities for our youth."

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, UCI Libraries has curated a reading list of books about the civil rights struggle, all of which may be checked out. Among the titles in the collection are Walking With the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement, by John Lewis; And We Are Not Saved: The Elusive Quest for Racial Justice, by Derrick Bell; and At the Dark End of the Street: Black Women, Rape, and Resistance – A New History of the Civil Rights Movement From Rosa Parks to the Rise of Black Power, by Danielle McGuire. Several related screening media titles are also available, including feature films and documentaries.
